About the "Best Friends Song"

I am the type of writer that cannot just sit down and write a song. The spirit has to move me, so it seems . When that spark ignites in me the words and the music come clear and very quickly .

With the song Best Friends, I was in a romantic restaurant one Saturday evening and I was dining alone so I had lots of opportunity to make some observations of other couples around me.

Many were eating their meal in silence, some spoke the occasional word to each other, sometimes it seemed only out of obligation. Many seemed just tired of each others company. 

Apathetic, was a word that came to my mind like they were sitting with a stranger and an unlikable one at that but two elderly lovers captivated my attention. 

They were maybe in their late 60's and for what it seemed like an hour or more they hadheld each others hand, gazed into each others eyes oblivious to those around them. They were enchanted by only each others company and it was like young lovers that had just met. 

I was mesmerized by their  apparent affection for each other. As I got up to leave I just could not resist  stopping at their table and asking them what their secret was. The elderly man said "we have been married for 48 eight years and my wife is still my Best Friend.

WOW!

As I drove home I thought about times as I grew up and my best friends. How I couldn't wait to spend time with them. How we talked for hours and it seemed like minutes. We had disagreements but we were always quick to make up.

As the miles slipped away the words to this song came to my heart. When I arrived at home I sat down and wrote the words and the music in a matter of moments!

This is the history behind "Best Friends".
